Wilderness Lifeguard for outdoor instructors

How many of you go for a dip in a beautiful waterfall after a long day of hiking?  Or, jump in the water after a day of paddling?  Are you trained as a wilderness lifeguard? Is someone in your group trained? AEE, ACA and WEA all have standards for waterfront safety and swimming activities in the backcountry.  However, the industry does not have a common agreement on a certification program for a “wilderness lifeguard”.  What do you think?  Do we need one? Would this be the next WFR?  I really like the program that Landmark has in place.

Outdoor Instructors Post-Season Tips

1.  Make sure you make time to renew your Wilderness First Responder

2. Get some friends together and go on a personal expedition.

3. Challenge yourself the same way you challenge your students! Your challenge might be to learn a computer program like Adobe Dreamweaver or to participate in a public hearing.

4.  Look for gear sales.  Local retail stores and online sites are having amazing sales during the off season.

5. Swap services.  Let’s say you are a kayaker, show someone effective paddling stroke and in exchange have them teaches you or give you something you want.

TIOBEC-Sailing staff expedition

We just finished another excellent training for Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center.  In this training we practice skills and shared knowledge among peers.  A big focus of this training was the seamanship skills of the curriculum without sacrificing the three main components of the Outward Bound expedition (training, main and final) and or the beacons.  Below you can see a video that illustrates our expedition theme “work hard and play harder”  Enjoy!
